Enrique and I had a fantastically fascinating conversation at PERC surrounding culture in the classroom. Something he said reminded me of the video I'm posting below, which takes place in the two minutes before the video in
this post. I promised I'd share this with him, so here it is!

ReplyDeleteJust as a quick comment, though, this is veeeeeeeery common. Teachers who serve a majority of ELLs feel the responsibility (and rightly so) to support their students in the process of developing their English language skills. Unfortunately, within the science context, that concern translates into front-loading (to borrow from L. Conlin and A. Elby) students with academic/technical vocabulary, without much of an understanding of the possible hindrances (linguistically and conceptually).
