Today was my second day of taking notes and I must say I feel ten times better compared to my feelings yesterday. I thank everyone who contributed in making today a more successful day for me with taking field notes. I kept rereading my notes from today and comparing them to yesterday's and I feel as if I still have tons of areas that could use some improvements but there is a clear sign of improvement on today's notes in comparison to yesterday's notes. So again, I thank everyone for their help, I really appreciate it.
As far as observations are concerned, today wasn't one of the best days for observations. I observed table 8 and today they were very chatty. They would have very little to say about whatever was assigned to them today and would drift off into having side conversations. I also had difficulty listening to Kara and Dan which impacted my interpretation of the conversation table 8 was having with one another. I sort of wished I would have placed the microphones on one of them instead of Don. However, I was still able to get some insight to what I believe they were trying to say.
I remember Brant expressed an interest of whole group conversations. In my opinion he has tons and tons of moments within the past several days that I can see him using towards his research. I (on the other hand) am having a harder time and for several reasons. I expressed having interest in how teachers can or will use their backgrounds (educational, location, etc.) to learn or even teach physics to their students. I have not spotted anything that could help me with what I am looking for. Then also listening to the whole group discussions have been pretty interesting and at times rather "juicy'. I have noticed that during the times where the entire class have captured my full attention would be when they are talking about the terminology that teachers use when talking about energy. The teachers express the concern for using terms like "change" and transform" and keep up with the state standards. Some say that it's not a big issue while others disagree. I wonder, what other words do the teachers have conflict with using in their classrooms (or this one) to describe energy. So now I am torn (but in a good way). I don't know what to do. Should I look at terminology of the words used in describing energy or should I stick with trying to see if the teachers will use their backgrounds at anytime help them to understand (or even teach) energy? The good thing about either way, is that I am quite curious about both.
Virginia,
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way last year when I started and Rachel gave me some awesome advice. She said, "Just look for something cool" and I took that to mean that I should just keep my eyes open for an interesting something (conversation, gesture, exchange, attitude, etc.) that I could cut into a small video clip and think about in more detail. I would suggest keeping your options open - and just looking for something that strikes your fancy in any sort of subject. I am sure you will find something cool!
