E1 class interaction with Energy Theater

Here is my last post on E1's first experience with Energy Theater.

It was interesting to see how the different groups interacted with each other and the performances.

One group choose clapping to represent kinetic energy.  This was very cool because as all the kinetic transferred to thermal you could HEAR the difference.  So energy theater was aural as well as visual.

One group had a member who decided to explain, in words, what his group had just acted out.  I wonder if this reflects on his epistemological stance.  The other two groups did not explain what they did.  They just acted it out.  It will be interesting to see if he continues this kind of verbal explanation or not as the course proceeds with its emphasis on enquiry approaches.

The last group to go noticed something they liked that the first group did.  So they tried to borrow it and work it in on the fly, but it didn't quite work well and other groups noticed and commented on it.

The last group had a person who was straddling two different objects at the same time.  So Lane noticed this and brought it up for a conversation.  There was a debate about if that person represented the same form in both objects or different forms.  Joe humorously demonstrated that the person could be doing one action with one hand showing one form of energy in one object and doing another action with the other hand showing a different form of energy in the other object simultaneously (it reminded me of a person patting their head and rubbing their stomach at the same time :^).

  1. The way you described this in our debriefing session this afternoon was a lot more colorful than you have it written here. However I would still love to see the visual in person that you have potrayed in both settings. This straddling thing Is it representing the energy changing its form from one to another or is the state of the object changing thereby causing a sort of energy change to imply conservation of energy. Wow I really want to see this!
