In E2 Mon 130805 PM, the groups had been introduced to the idea that they would be sharing their notebooks with each other. Next they were given example excerpts from scientists notebooks (Einstein, two by Pauling, one sketchy and one neat, Jane Goodall, etc.). It was clear that they were very different in style.
In the selected group work episode, I was intrigued by how the group relates to the way their own energy theater sessions turn out different and not "universal". Next they turn to discussing how they introduce their students to the task of writing notebooks. On the one hand, there should be room for expressing their personal styles of writing, but then again, if they do not have any examples of what could be done, they will not be able to get starting. In addition, eventually students will have to synthesise their disperse notes into a more standardised lab report.
Some of the scientists' notebooks were sketchy and meant to be used for his or her own use, while others were neater and meant to be shared with others. This reminded me of Shaaron Ainsworth’s research on learning by drawing to oneself vs. for others.

ReplyDelete"Constructing meaning from our experience." I loved their reflections on the use of the notebook. It is impossible to not make comparisons with Justyna episode.
ReplyDeleteIn this group they are more focused on the use of the notebook as a way to freely express their ideas. They consider as a tool to make sense of what they experience during this course. They don't seem to be concerned on being read by others. The difference could be in how all of them agree this is an informal space to share their thoughts rather than a place to find evidence on their learning?
I don't know if you did it, but maybe you and Justyna should talk about the similarities and differences of your tables.
I LOVED that phrase -- "constructing meaning from our experience." So good.
