Jeff and Trevor both teach middle school and are having a
conversation about the middle school, specifically 6th grade. Trevor plays with his Rubik’s Cube while talking to Jeff and
he talks about fixing kids and then they go to their teachers who are fine with
students memorizing. This leads into a conversation about grades
Trevor- I did not give any test this year and I taught math
and science. It was not based on the correctness of their work. For me it is
about motivating them to get the work done. I am rebel in that regard.
After the video Jeff starts a conversation on standards and
about how large his classes are (…”I have so many kids”)
T- my honors kids want to please.. They are tied to their
grades. If I say you are not really giving me what I need…. The honors kids
want to satisfy. He talks about his
substitute assignments and how much the kids like them because the plan is
clear.
I just thought this was an interesting clip that showcased
two teachers talking informally about how they grade and what they value in terms of how and why they grade.
