E1 used Energy Cubes for the first time in Tuesday (first week). In table 6 (3 woman -Emma, Krista, and Barbara- and 1 man -Tracy-) there seems to be some roles involved in their dynamics. The three girls actively discuss a lot to figure out the energy in the scenario, while Tracy plays a role as a consultant for them. When they have a content question, they ask directly to Tracy to know the answer.
Ending the planning of the energy cubes
This team had a difficult time planning the cubic energy dynamics. Here we can see how both Emma (on the left) and Barbara (on the right) ask for Tracy's approval as they move in the decision making. They discuss the presence of potential energy in the scenario. They talk about potential energy being present, but is there other potential energy? They decide to left out gravitational potential energy (as consensus).
When Tracy considered what would happens if they consider it "although..." they both reject the idea to include it, they say "we are ready to move on (Barbara)" "I am not ready for that Tracy [...] I can't go there yet (Emma)".
Is he being considered as a reference in the group instead of an active member from it? He expressed the curiosity to discuss on the potential energy and how it goes to the floor. Yet when he observe the reaction he decides to abandon it, "I didn't go there" as saying he also thinks is difficult. I think Tracy is being responsive to his team situation. He has been attending to the group participation and reacting to that. He first say he dismissed it, but they he try to discuss it. At the end, after presenting his personal position he decides to not go there.
I decided to add the last seconds of this video to show how their dynamics, even after that tension with the energy cubes, still seem to be in a good environment of collaboration.
On the other hand, I am intrigued... what to they mean when they talk about potential energy? Emma talks about gravitational potential and then ask Tracy if he thinks there is other potential energy not due to gravity... I have observed potential energy being particularly difficult while doing ET. I don't know if Lane has established some rules on the use of the label potential energy.
Comparison with the other representations
They are talking to Adam (instructor) about the differences between using energy theater and Energy Cubes (EC).
[1:32] Emma presents the concern that doing ET allows people who doesn't know stay in a passive role while the other do the thinking and tell you what to do. She consider that working with EC, since it is a smaller group, it involves a more active role from all of the participants and it adds more complication (since everyone is involved in the decisions]. Adam present his personal reaction to be told what to do [1:54] "I would say why?, I am the guy who push back". Emma still believe that if you don't want anyone to know you don't know it would be easy to not participate in ET. Barbara answer to that "But then when people started talking, everybody started talking".
Now I wonder... How were they acting during their ET? Is their comments related to what they experience... I would like to know if Emma actively participated during the decision making in the ET. What I liked about this video is that during the process of the EC everyone was into the analysis of what was happening, they questioned each other in every step they made for the representation. They were so meticulous and got frustrated more than once, they seemed to be very exhausted by the end of the planning (shown in this episode). I am amazed on the engagement they shown during this activity despite the frustration they got.
In the first clip, I'm not sure Tracy is being treated as knowledgeable; they might also be soliciting his opinion just because he hasn't spoken up and they want to include him. Then he tries to go off on a tangent and they reel him in. That would be another interpretation.
ReplyDeleteWhen they say they want a diagram, what are they referring to? What have they been doing with diagrams in E1?
ReplyDeleteI wasn't there when the diagram started, but they have been doing diagrams (with no formal instruction) for some scenarios they've been analyzing. I would assume that started one morning, but we have pictures of their diagrams in case you are interested.
