Since we had technical difficulties with one of our SD cards, today (it didn't record video, properly), I would suggest that we initialize SD cards before we use them. Here's how that works.
1. Put a "new" SD card into the camcorder.
2. Turn on the camera.
3. Push the "Func." button on the bottom left of the display.
4. Navigate to "Menu" by pushing the 4-way controller up once.
5. Hit the "Set" button.
6. Navigate to the "Memory Oper." menu by pushing the 4-way controller down once.
7. Select the entry "Card Info" by pushing the 4-way controller to the right once.
8. Select the entry "Initialize" by pushing the 4-way controller down once.
9. Hit the "Set" button.
10. Select the entry "Comp. Init." by pushing the 4-way controller down once.
11. Hit the "Set" button.
12. Select the entry "Yes" by pushing the 4-way controller down once.
13. Hit the "Set" button.
14. Stand by for a couple of moments, this will take a minute or two.
15. Once the process is completed, hit the "Set" button once more to get back to the menu.
16. Hit the "Func." button to leave the menu and return to the normal camera operation.
17. The display should now show a total remaining recording time of about five and a half hours.
This procedure should help avoiding card errors and prevent data loss...
If you're wondering, where this ominous "4-way controller" is, it's located all the way to the left of the display, the little joystick-thingy. Still not sure? Ask me.
