Unfortunately, our Canon digital video cameras store the recorded videos in a very stupid way, namely by using some weird format and then putting some even weirder extension to the file, so that we had to convert all the videos into a readable format before we could select good or bad videos. I just found out a way to actually view videos off the SD card which should make things a lot easier and faster for us. Here's how. Instructions apply to both Mac and PC if not indicated otherwise.
1. Download the VLC player from http://www.videolan.org
2. Install the VLC player (Mac: double click the disk image and then just drag the VLC symbol into your Applications folder, Win: you probably have to double click setup.exe and follow the instructions...)
3a. Mac: CTRL-click the VLC symbol in your apps folder, choose "Show Package Contents" from the drop down menu. Navigate to Contents => MacOS => plugins and delete the file "libmod_plugin.dylib." Yes, that sounds strange, just do it.
3b. Win: Delete the file "c:\program files\videolan\vlc\plugins\libmod_plugin.dll" Again, this might sound strange, but really, go ahead and do it!
4. Double click the .MOD file on the SD card. You might have to allow opening the newly installed program because you downloaded it from the oh-so-bad internet.
5. There you have it. Watch and enjoy.
Benedikt,
ReplyDeleteYour writing is very entertaining!
FYI, you can also play .mod files with Windows Media Player.
Bene, you're going to make me cry. You mean there's an EASIER solution than converting the whole damn file?!? After all this time, who knew?
ReplyDeleteMichael, I was hoping that you would read this post ;-) The internet knew. Sort of. I had to adopt the Win-procedure for my trusted Mac. It worked...
